Identities, capabilities and revisions

چکیده

In this paper I want first to ask whether one can change « who » he is. A dilemma is lurking there, a dilemma between autonomy of change and continuity of personal identity. The notion of capability is submitted to a related difficulty. Autonomy implies to be self-committed to an activity but commitment implies revisions of other activities, and this changes the situation and the evaluation of the freedom given by capability itself. I will show that the two difficulties (how to ensure continuity of choice and how to evaluate a situation of choice changed by the very revisions that each of its choices imply) can be overcame by putting conditions on revisions –epistemic revision and preferences revision. These conditions define a procedure leading to what I call a « justified path of revision and action ». They could also be considered as conditions for defining justified adaptive preferences. I will examine several examples in order to show how this procedure of evaluation works. It works as a prospective evaluation as well as a retrospective one. It can compare two different capabilities while ensuring the continuity of personal identity and the real autonomy of the person.

Belief revision is the process of revising beliefs in light of new information. Belief contraction is the process of giving up beliefs to make them consistent with new information. The Levi and Harper Identities provide constructions of revisions and contractions in terms of each other. This paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for when revisions can be constructed from contractions,...

Artificial Immune Recognition System (AIRS): Revisions and Refinements

This paper revisits the Artificial Immmune Recognition System (AIRS) that has been developed as an immune-inspired supervised learning algorithm. Certain unnecessary complications of the original algorithm are discussed and means of overcomming these complexities are proposed. Experimental evidence is presented to support these revisions which do not sacrifice the accuracy of the original algor...

Dynamic Threat-resistant Node Identification in Sensor Networks

There are numerous challenges in ensuring secure communications within modern Wireless Sensor Networks. In particular, valid node identification in sensor networks is a crucial aspect of maintaining data confidentiality and nonrepudiation. Statically-assigned identities provide simple capabilities, but they also allow attackers to easily predict IDs—thus creating a susceptibility to sensor impe...

Interactive Revision Exploration using Small Multiples of Software Maps

To explore and to compare different revisions of complex software systems is a challenging task as it requires to constantly switch between different revisions and the corresponding information visualization. This paper proposes to combine the concept of small multiples and focus+context techniques for software maps to facilitate the comparison of multiple software map themes and revisions simu...

The processes of cultural transformation in Britain in the second half of the 20th century, the fall of the Empire, immigration from former colonies and the expansion of the multiculturalism, have influenced new ways of looking at the conceptions of identity of diasporic subjects within Britain. Examining these experiences, diasporic novelists write about the second generation immigrants in con...
